Why is vaginal lubrication important? – Keep it wet down there!

One of the most important signs of arousal and results of arousal is the wetness that surrounds a woman’s most important part of her body. It usually occurs naturally in women and some women become more lubricated than others.

Lubrication is vital for easy penetration which reduces the friction caused by the entry of the penis into the vagina and reduces irritation. Inadequate lubrication leads to pain during the act of pleasure. Lubrication enhances sexual activity and makes it more eventful.

Some women experience vaginal dryness as a result of the production of less estrogen due to menopause or other hormonal reasons. Intercourse during this time can lead to a painful experience where over-the-counter lubricants facilitate the process.

Foreplay plays a major role in arousing both the partners’ feelings. Lubrication as a result of foreplay augments the sexual experience. Both need to know the importance of lubrication and its effect. For those who are unable to attain lubrication, an artificial lubricant or lube can be applied to make it more comfortable.

If natural lubrication is not enough, people can use artificial lubricant, or lube, to make sexual activity more comfortable. Fluid from the cervix and secretion from the Bartholin glands help the vagina to lubricate especially on arousal to reduce friction.

Vaginal dryness can be reduced with the help of artificial lubricants. They are available in many different textures, flavors, and materials according to one’s tastes and preferences.

A lubricant should be used to reduce the vaginal dryness caused due to medication, hormonal changes during pregnancy, menopause, or if there isn’t sufficient lubrication.

The different types of lubricants are:

Water-based lubricants that contain Glycerin. This lube is quite popular. Glycerin-free options are also available for those who are prone to yeast functions.

A better option would be Silicone-based lubricants for people with severe vaginal dryness or for those who experience pain during intercourse. They should however not be used with silicone toys though. Silicone and water-based lubricants are safe to use with latex condoms

Oil-based lubricants are usually edible and are safe for the vagina like cooking oil, but Synthetic oil-based lubricants, such as mineral oil and petroleum jelly, though could lead to irritation of the vulva. Oil-based lubricants may destroy latex condoms.

There are vaginal moisturizers that act as lubricants that can help with chronic dryness. They help with reducing intense dryness even though sexual activity might not be involved.

Estrogen creams also help in treating vaginal dryness that occurs due to low estrogen levels. They help replace the lost estrogen caused either due to menopause or other medical conditions. However, estrogen creams should be utilized only after professional advice.

Apart from menopause, factors like stress, breastfeeding, smoking, depression, childbirth, and rigorous exercise can also lead to menopause.

Instructions should be followed methodically while using lubricants. It is good to start with a small amount of lubricant and gradually increase. If the vagina feels itchy or sore after application of the lubricant, then the user must be stopped immediately.
